It was found that forests

absorb 42% of the fine dust generated in Seoul.

Reducing pollutants is its primary function of forest. Particularly nowadays, fine dust reduction function is attracting public attention. Trees greatly reduce fine dust through absorption, adsorption, sedimentation, and blocking. Absorption refers to the absorption of dust by the pores of the leaves. Adsorption means that the dust sticks to the leaves. Sediment means that the dust sinks under the forest, and blocking means that dense forests block the movement of fine dust.

 

"The specific amount of fine dust adsorption and sediment is about 30% each, and the remaining 40% is for blocking and absorbing.," said Dr. Park Chan-yeol of National Institute of Forest Science. "On average, one tree absorbs fine dust, amount of one cup of espresso (30mL) (35.7g), so if you assume it is a forest, this amount will be huge.” Considering adsorption, sedimentation, and blocking, forest really reduces air pollutants and it actually helps. In fact, according to the research of National Institute of Forest Science in 2016, it was found that forests absorb 42% of the fine dust generated in Seoul.

Hyundai Motor Company started the Hyundai Green Zone Project, which is a global eco-restoration project, starting in 2008 in China, and also carried out ‘Ioniq Forest’ in 2016 in Korea. In cooperation with Tree Planet and Sudokwon Landfill Management Corporation,, we planted 8,450 trees including zelkova trees and pine trees in Ioniq Forest as of July 2018.
